DesignCrowd began sponsoring my podcast, The Side Hustle Show, this year, and I wanted to give the service a shot for the cover of my new book, Buy Buttons.
If you’re not familiar with how Designcrowd and other crowdsourced design services work, basically you submit your design brief, and select from a few different price tiers of how much you want to award to the winning designer. Designers from all over the world submit their ideas and you pick the winner.
Naturally, the bigger the reward, the more entries you’re likely to receive.
I picked a middle of the road pricing option (around $250 — by FAR the most I’d ever spent on a book cover), and ended up getting 35-40 design submissions from 13 different designers.
Some of them, honestly, were horrible. But a few were pretty good, and one I LOVED. I was able to go back and forth with the designer to make tweaks and adjustments to the colors and the images used.
Check out the video to see some of the submissions and the winning design. I think the most important factors in the contest are the award amount, whether or not its guaranteed, and how well and quickly you can communicate with your designers.
