This is my review of the HBO mini-series documentary The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.
I think The Jinx was one of the best criminal documentary series I have seen. The events this series was based on were some of the most obscure I have ever seen. The manner of the murder(s) described in it as well as the way that many of the characters behaved are baffling. Watching The Jinx feels like a fictional murder mystery because many of the events depicted are stranger than fiction. Bob Durst is certainly not your typical person. His status in society, I believe, contributed to the unorthodox way that he acts, and the film even goes to great lengths to give the audience reason to sympathize for him.
This documentary discusses some questionable disappearances and murders that took place between 1982 and 2001. Footage from various periods of time are juxtaposed against current day interview footage of Robert Durst in which the director questions him and attempts to gain some clarity about what happened to the missing and dead people.
Although some of the methods used to obtain information in this documentary are questionable, I am not in a circumstance to judge the morality of the documentarian, and as a whole, I think Andrew Jarecki did a very good job directing this film. I an a fan of documentaries, and this one was above par. I am looking forward to the next film from Jarecki.
