In the castle Duernstein (in German Dürnstein), now a ruin, King Richard, the Lionheart, of England was held captive by Duke Leopold V in the Middle Ages. Durnstein forms part of the picturesque valley of the Wachau. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations of Austria, located midway between the towns of Melk and Krems. The Wachau valley as "Wachau Cultural Landscape" is part of the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites.
