And exactly 24 years later, he retired from international cricket. Yes, exactly 24 years later.
Three years back in 2013, Tendulkar played his last match for India at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. India were playing a two-Test series against the West Indies, the second of which was hosted in Mumbai. Tendulkar had entertained the cricket fans world over for more that 24 years and it was no surprise that thousands came to the Wankhede when the Little Master played his last.
Chants of “Sachin, Sachin” could be heard inside the Wankhede on all three days of the match. (India won the game inside three days). There were long queues outside the stadium as well.
After the post-match presentation ceremony, Tendulkar took over the mike and talked out people who had helped him reach the pinnacle of cricket for all these years. In his farewell speech, Tendulkar was emotional and thanked his fans for all the support throughout the years.
Tendulkar went on to play #200 Test matches for India and scored 15971 runs at an average of 53.78. But what is more astonishing in the number of centuries he had scored. In all international matches, Tendulkar has scored 100 centuries with 51 of them coming in Tests.
Similarly, Tendulkar holds phenomenal record in ODIs. In the 463 matches his has played, he has scored 18426 runs at an average of 44.83. He was also the first player in history to score a ODI double hundred. In ODIs, Tendulkar has 154 wickets and also has two five wickets hauls. Disclaimer -
