RICHLAND, Pa. -- Many areas will start trick-or-treating Thursday night and 6 News has a few safety tips for parents to keep in mind.
Some towns decided to have Halloween Thursday mainly due to Friday night football, but whatever day Halloween is, safety still applies.
Here are a few tips to keep kids safe on the streets while they trick-or-treat:
First, parents could purchase glow sticks.
Glow sticks are inexpensive and easy to find and can be turned into necklaces or bracelets.
Second, parents can purchase a flashlight.
Flashlights blink so drivers can see and parents can use them as part of their childs costume.
For a childs costume, parents should make sure they can see out of it while they are crossing the street.
Reflective tape could help to add visibility as well.
Lastly, purchase a shiny trick-or-treat bag that light can reflect off of.
During trick-or-treating, police wants parents to inspect their childs candy and remind their kids about crossing the streets with safety.
Some parents may be driving their child to another neighbor and they may not be familiar with the streets they are walking.
The Richland Police Department started bagging candy Thursday morning to hand out during trick-or-treating in the area.
They plan to ride through the streets and hand out those bags and make sure everyone is safe.
They said this is always a good way to get to know the kids in their area as well.
