Are you ready for something amazing? Same day 3d printed dentures is really possible and is something anyone can do!!
Imagine this scenario: I am seeing a patient ready for a same-day reline, converting from their immediate mandibular denture into a final mandibular overdenture with Zest LOCATOR abutments processed in the final. Typically, I would need to see the patient first thing in the morning, remove the soft liner and then do a reline impression. Immediately after that clinical appointment, the patient would drive an hour away to the dental laboratory (to save a week without teeth) for a hard rebase of the denture. Later that day, the patient comes back with the finished denture and I fit it to the mouth and pick up the housings directly in the mouth. While yes, I could try doing the relines in my office, but that is messy and requires a full laboratory to do properly!!
I decided to put the 3D Systems / NextDent 5100 to the test with the Medit i500. I scanned the denture 360 degrees using the Medit scanner, scanned the opposing and bite in the mouth and off we go. I digitally designed the new denture using the old denture as a reference and guide using Autodesk Meshmixer, Exocad, and 3Shape Dental Systems software. I then printed the teeth using NextDent MFH resin, and the base using NextDent Base resin. Heck, I did it to see if I could do it between patients in a full-day scheduled in my office!!!
Later that day? Fit like a glove... and I had 2 hours to spare compared to where it would normally take my lab technician. Wow, 3D printing is truly breathtaking!!
