Here's a pile of junk from March, 2011 that I was asked to repair for a friend of a friend. It was working one night and failed to work the next morning (all it would do is click). After unplugging the Y-sustain board, the set would come up and produce audio; which, told me that this board had an issue. After removing the board, I found numerous bad solder connections and after those were fixed, the set now clicks no matter if the Y-sustain board is plugged in or not. I was talking to a TV repair friend of mine about this set and he said that it's common for the buffer board to fail, taking out both sustain boards. He said that when these sets were under warranty, the manufacturer would insist on all 3 boards being replaced at once. That's all fine and good under warranty; but, it's not worth it for an out of warranty set.
So, I'm bailing on it. And, I don't want to hear anything about bad capacitors (I've already checked that). Yes, bad capacitors cause their share of problems; but, some people seem to think that recapping something is going to automatically cure the problem.
Meanwhile, my boring outdated woodgrain plastic sets from the '70's and '80's keep going like the energizer bunny. You know, the type of TV that people today would be embarrassed to have in their home. Well, not me. I'll gladly take an old CRT set over some modern crap costing hundreds of dollars that will fail soon.
