I use a lot of high quality cordless powertools and have always been interested with the safety aspect, since watching the many videos on YouTube on the topic of Lithium-ion battery fires and explosions.
I wondered how dangerous my high capacity battery packs are should one get seriously damaged on the job site, since they all contain 10 Lithium-ion AA (actually slightly larger) cells.
I know my battery packs have electronic protection circuitry, but nothing that would prevent each cell from serious structural damage.
I’m pretty handy with a GoPro and wanted a video to post that wasn’t out of focus and shaking all over the place like so many are. Plus there isn’t much on the topic of this type of cell used in your better professional powertools.
I say this because these battery packs typically utilise high-quality Samsung or LG branded cells, and so I am interested in how they compare to the very cheap no-name mass-produced Chinese ones often used.
Then there is just the fun of it all and trying to create a video that will interest a lot of viewers and get a stack of views! So I set the GoPro at a frame rate of 240fps and got all set up with plenty of safety in mind to make my own YouTube sensation.
The POSITIVE Result: The Samsung cell took a hell of a beating and a lot of persistence to get any chemical reaction. There was no explosion and almost everything I tried that should have return a spectacular result didn’t. Put this cell in a well-built powertool battery pack and you have yourself the best possible safety for this type of application. In my mind anyway.
The NEGATIVE Result: I didn’t get to capture that exciting action worth playing back in super-slow-motion and your probably the only one who watched my video because nothing really awesome happened.
