I'm building a 1150sq addition to my house, two bed rooms for my daughters (currently sharing a small room) two bathrooms, a large mud/laundry room and a BIG MANCAVE. I was looking over the plans and checking the codes when I thought I could build a scale model of the framing to work out the kinks. Little did I know this would end up taking on a life of its own.
The scale 1 inch to 1 foot, easy to convert but made for a rather large model in the end. Any smaller, and I think it would have been harder to work with and not to mention riskier on the fingers trying to cut the scale lumber.
Lumber was cut to scale, 2x4, 2x6 and 2x10, the 2x4's and 2x6's where cut to 7 3/4" to approximate 92 1/4 dimensional lumber used in wall framing. The 2x10's were cut to the length in one piece to complete the floor joists
Joist and framing is scale 16" OC, I did not cut the bottom plate from the doorways was because the model is disassembled for transport and storage, it was necessary and keep the door frames rigid.
Scale lumber cut ( not all of it was used in the model, just like in the real world, not all the lumber was usable)
-180 2x6's
-200 2x4's
-80 2x10's
160 hours to cut, glue and assemble the model, approximately 24 hours were spent on the floor structure.
The roof comes next, but I think I should get started on the real addition...
No new materials were used, I just used up those old scraps of wood leftover from other projects.
