Dylan Medrano, DIT student: "Today we are at Alki cove, this is week 3 in the NAUI open water course. Generally on campus it's hard hat diving, SCUBA is completely different.
Instead of being a vertical diver walking around on the bottom, here you're going to be a horizontal diver so you're doing your best to stay off the bottom. You take all your air with you instead of being surface supplied.
Underwater navigation is huge, being able to use a compass, you can't just follow your hose back home. "
Instructor Mike Hemion: "They are going out and having fun but they don't realize that they are working on boyancy the whole time. We tell them not to stir up the bottom so they'll spend five ten feet off the bottom so their fins aren't stirring it up.
We don't have an umbilical to pull behind us, we can go up and down a lot easier, we can hover in mid water easier."
Student Dylan Medrano: "it's pretty cool to get out with the wildlife and start to really expand your horizons and really see what is out there"
