If you dont know what you are trying to achieve you will never achieve it. Classic example is "I want to get toned". Since "toned" is a vague and unmeasurable, it is a very poor goal. A good fitness goal will be Specific, Measurable, Time Bounded, and Realistic. "I want to gain 100 pounds of muscle naturally in 2013" is specific, measurable and time bounded but its certainly not realistic. Unrealistic goals just lead to discouragement, this is probably the main reason that most people quit bodybuilding is that they had unrealistic expectations when they started.
