A beautiful frontend offers a lot of solutions, and most game designers are conversant with the various engines and frameworks available. But the backend layer also has numerous choices. You can roll your own. You can use existing servers such as Photon. Unity has released new networking solutions. And no-name companies like Amazon and Google claim they understand servers by offering AWS and Google App Engine. Become as versed in these options as you are in the front end engines we all know and love.

Clint Doriot is the Directory of Technology at Thrust Interactive. After graduating with his Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Computer Engineering, Clint worked at the Georgia Institute of Technology as a Research Engineer. There he conducted research, developed software and led development teams across a variety of technology applications, including Serious Game Development, Augmented Reality, Virtual Worlds, Cyber Security, Robotics, Networking, Databases, and Rich Internet Applications. At Thrust Interactive, Clint has been responsible for designing and developing the client/server architecture and reusable game sub-systems, including work on b Spot Cashinko and HLN Keywords.
Matt is a fifteen year game industry vet whose credits include City of Heroes, City of Villains, and Global Agenda. His real love is for quirky 2D games like Castle Crashers and Monkey Island, classic animation, and board games. Other programmers make fun of him because his degree is in history.
