After searching for a while for a storage solution for all my spices and herbs, i settled down to this spice sets from Ikea and organized all of them in a drawer.
IKEA SPICE CONTAINERS
I have a storage drawer that i especially made for all my spices to fit. I bought the Ikea spice jars, which are really cheap, I paid only 3 Eur for a pack of 4.
They can fit standing or laying, depending on your drawer size.
TIP 1: LABELING
Order the spice jars alphabetically, this is awesome especially if you're in a hurry. Another great thing about this spice organization tip is that if others cook in your kitchen, they will not bug you every time they need a spice, because it’s so easy to figure out where each spice is at.
I had a problem with labeling the spice containers. Unfortunately Ikea hasn't thought of labeling. I tried more ways and eventually I came up with two ways of labeling the spice bottles.
1. Golden labels: Use a golden spray paint to make the permanent marker stay (in the beginning I tried just writing directly on the container which is made of glass, but for some reason the writing doesn't last, especially if you wash them from time to time). I haven’t tried to wash these golden ones by now, so I don’t know if the painting and the writing will be intact.
2. After finishing the golden ones, I added new ones to the collection and haven’t had time to label them like the rest, so I just put these sticky colored posts labels on the glass jars. I think it’s a more efficient way, because you can get them of easily if you want to wash them and then put them back or replace them with ease.
TIP 2: CLEANING THE CONTAINERS
Washing the spice containers. I recommend one of this two ways of washing them:
1. If you can remove the labels from the spice bottles, or if you don’t have any just soak them for 1 hour in soapy water and then wash them with a sponge.
2. Put the spice jars in the dishwashing machine if you have one. Wash the caps separately, by soaking them in soapy water and then wash them with a sponge.
TIP 3: BUY “REAL” INGREDIENTS
I try to buy as much as possible the real natural herbs from the market instead of taking the packed spices in the supermarket. That simple thing makes a huge difference in the final taste of the food you cook. If you don’t find dry herbs at the market buy the green ones and let them dry for 2 days or more and then put them in the containers.
