Music is Rotted One Note had seen Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher breaking out in a new direction: quoting abstract jazz and musique concrète, the mini album Budakhan Mindphone, released in 1999, pushes forward a similar style as its predecessor. For the first time ever using effects processors in a transformative way, the EP conveys the vivacity that stems from improvisation. ‘Two Bass Hit (Dub)’ features a free form slapping bass, ‘The Tide’ buries its jazz cymbals under eerie synths, and the ultra slowed-down breakbeat of ‘Iambic 5 Poetry’ gives way to one of Jenkinson’s classic expressive melodies.
