Okay, apparently I've answered this question more than once on this video, so I will put it up here. For those who keep asking how to get Dias, the game will automatically give you the option to recruit him at the Front Lines. This only happens on Rena's scenario.

On my Earth difficulty playthrough I decided to just not bother with item creation and (mostly) went with just the things I found or bought. Gabriel destroyed me the first three times before I finally defeated him. This time I switched Claude's Dragon Roar and Rock Explosion with Helmetbreak (to get by his divine wave, though he didn't use it here) and Burst Knuckle, and demolished him. Goes to show how easy the 3-hit combo can make the game. :)
