Today I built a shelf to hold light items such as bedding and pillows. My mom has a staging business and with that comes a whole lot of bedding. She asked me to build her some shelves to hold it all and keep them organized. Since these only need to hold light items, half inch white panel board works perfect. Its also a really smooth surface so it wont grab on the bedding like plywood does. I built these with 2x4's just in case we wanted to convert them later on into storage for bigger items. In that case cross braces and heavier plywood could easily be added.
