The 8-day Switzerland itinerary we did:
We stayed in Interlaken, at Hotel Krebs, walking distance (~200m) from the train station. From Interlaken, we explored Switzerland by train, making use of the 8 day Swiss Travel Pass.
Day 1: Grindelwald - Lauterbrunnen - Murren
We started off with the fairy tale town of Grindelwald, which is offers tourist an abundance of activities and things to do and experience. Late morning/early afternoon we took the train to Lauterbrunnen. After we explored the town, we took the cable car up to Murren, a small town that boasts its own unique character.
Day 2: Engelberg Ski Resort (Mt. Titlis)
The next day we took the train in the direction of Lucerne, to get to Engelberg Ski Resort. We spend the whole day here. The Ski Resort offers al of activities for families and tourists, ("Ice Tunnel", ski lift, tube sledging, hang bridge, etc.), apart from skiing - the reason we chose to do Engelberg. (I know Jungfrau also has a lot of things to do - Engelberg was just priced better)
Day 3: Cailler - Gruyere - Lake Geneva (Montreux)
We got up early, and took the train to the Cailler chocolate factory - we enjoyed it, and would advise our friends and family to visit. From there we took the train to the Gruyere cheese factory. At the time we visited, for both the chocolate and cheese tours we received a 50% discount, because of the active Swiss Travel Passes we had. From there on, we traveled further South-West and had a late lunch on the banks of Lake Geneva, in Montreux, before heading back to Interlaken.
Day 4: Lucerne - Meiringen
We spend a day in Lucerne, visiting all the top tourist destinations in the city. On our way back, we got off at the small town called Meiringen. Meiringen was a contrast to Lucerne, due to the fact that here we could experience a small Switzerland community, not specifically catering for tourists.
Day 5: Bern
The cobblestone streets of Bern did not disappoint. Much like Luczerne, in the way that there is more than enough for a tourist to do, see and experience. We spend the day in the city, hitting the tourist hot spots and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Day 6: Spiez - Turin - Interlaken
After a hectic couple of days touring and exploring Switzerland, getting up early to maximize the days, we spend today visiting the neighboring Interlaken towns, and spend some time in Interlaken also. Spiez and Turin has, like a lot of the big name cities (Bern, Zurich, Montreux) also their own bit of fascinating history and things to do an see. After visiting these two Interlaken neighboring towns, we glad that we took the time to explore them. Late afternoon we returned back to Interlaken, and took part in the Christmas festival that was happening in the centre of the town. It is "vibe-y" town because a lot of tourist chooses to make this their Switzerland touring base.
Day 7: Zermatt
The most popular reason to visit Zermatt is probably to see the Matterhorn. Our mission was to spend a day, experiencing what Zermatt town has to offer. Zermatt made me think of Grindelwald, and we would definitely visit again.
Day 8: Zurich - Rain Falls
We spend one night in Zurich, because our flights were booked early the next day. It has the look and feel of an large European city, and here is a lot of shopping opportunities. As you can expect, this is where you can stock up with good quality chocolate. After we enjoyed the city sounds and flavors, we took the train to Rhine Falls, to see one of the largest falls in Switzerland - something I would also recommend one put in one's itinerary.
Hope this itinerary gives you an idea of how you can travel Switzerland. This is a packed itinerary, but should have you limited time in Switzerland; I would recommend this for you.
