This is "I tried to forget you" by Sylvester from his 1977 LP "Over and over" on Fantasy records.
This LP is a classic and includes such hits as the self titled cut "Over and over" as well as "Down, down down". This cut happens to be a personal favorite of mine from that LP with Harvey Fuqua on production. For those who aren't familiar, Fuqua was the producer behind such groups as New Birth and the Nite Liters.
