"The Blue Coat" is a Jewish folktale which can be told for any age group, but here I am telling it the way I tell it for preschoolers, using a felt board. It is often called 'The Tailor'.
It is a beautiful, simple, circle story, which makes it easy to retell and so perfect for beginners. You can simplify it far more and it can still work well. It has many themes which can be explored: growing up, family love, valuing possessions, recycling, dealing with loss, as well as the story of storytelling.
My telling is closely based on Hugh Lupton's beautiful version. It is included on my award-winning new CD for kids 'Reaching for the Moon'.
