THE HIDDEN FORT LOST IN TIME
Today we are exploring what is known as the Detached Bastion in Dover, a huge network of tunnels joined by various rooms, staircases and different levels. It is a Napoleonic fortification built around 200 years ago in the early 19th century, yet was never used as the area was never invaded. It was also used in the Second World War however never saw any action, like most of Dover's defences. The area we are exploring today is in the central part of Western Heights (the network of forts), though there are similar structures to the East and West. The Eastern section is open to the public to walk around, whilst the Western-most structure is far less accessible. Referred to as the Southern Casemates, it is even larger than the structure we are exploring in this video and can be found in on of our previous ones linked below:
