The LIFX bulb system was originally a kickstarter i believe but is now in its second generation of products. Its still fairly expensive but less expensive than at launch. It does not need a hub like the Hue and it works on your own WIFI.
Best of all it links with all the best home automation products like Smartthings, Nest, IF and others and is great fun for day to day and party nights.
