Prior to the invention of the hydrometer, alcoholic content was tested by mixing a bit of liquor with gunpowder, then seeing if it would light. If the liquor was at 50% alcohol or higher, the powder would flare up. Lower, and it wouldn't.
I try it out here with musket powder and six liquors. No eyebrows were lost in this experiment.
