The deserted Salton Sea Beach city has seen better days in 70s and 80s with throngs of visitors and plenty of lake side activities, watersports and fishing. The rapid evaporation, emptying of fertilizer salts from nearby farms and insufficient fresh water supply from Colorado, Alamo and Whitewater river has led to increased salinity that resulted in death of millions of fishes in 2009. The stench even reached Los Angeles ! Authorities let the fish dry as the cost of a clean up of this large lake would have cost millions.
It is a pity that we may lose a large number of birds who make it their home during migratory season unless prompt, effective measures are undertaken.
