Because of superstitious beliefs in some cultures, black cats are sometimes associated with bad luck and, sadly, are more likely to be put to sleep or wait a long time to be adopted. Even in modern times, you still hear black cats being associated with these superstitions. So in honour of Black Cat Appreciation Day let's try to dispel these myths and look at 5 cool facts about black cats:
1. Not every culture and community believed that black cats are bad luck or evil. The Scots believed that a black cat's arrival to the home signifies prosperity. Black cats are also considered to be lucky in Britain and Japan. Furthermore, it is believed that a lady who owns a black cat will have many suitors.
2. Some black cats aren't actually black. That's because many black cats are the result of a recessive gene that suppresses their inherited tabby pattern. If it isn't completely suppressed faint traces can still show up in certain lighting.
3. More than one breed. According to CFA, there are 22 breeds of cats that can have solid black coats. However, the Bombay breed is the only breed that only comes in one colour which is exclusively black.
4. There is a dominant gender and eye colour amongst black cats. Black cats can be male or female but black coats are more prevalent in male cats. Also, because of their high levels of melanin pigment, almost all black cats have yellow or golden eyes.
5. A cat with two parents both possessing a dominant black gene will almost always be pure black. However, if some of these cats has a recessive red gene, the child may also carry it resulting in the fact that sometimes black cats appear "rusty" in the sun.
17th August is a National Black Cat Appreciation Day which was launched to show people that black cat could be the perfect companion for them and help raise awareness about black cats in general. Despite black cat oriented promotions or reduced fees, adopters are still more likely to choose a more colourful companion.
Black cats are awesome little ninjas and panthers! Most importantly remember - love knows no colour!
