Onboard with JW Myers when he lost the skidfin entering the Roostertail Turn during Heat 1B at the 2010 Gold Cup, sending the U-37 Peters & May hurtling towards the pit area.
Myers faced two choices - either turn left into the crowded pit area, or turn right, and face crashing straight into the seawall in front of the Roostertail Restaurant. Myers turned right - into the seawall - destroying the boat and crushing his left foot, but saving untold lives in the pit area.
The crash completely disintegrated the left sponson and detached the right sponson. JW's injuries were sustained when the spar (a large steel beam that connects the left and right sponson) tore through the bottom of the cockpit, crushing Myers' left foot and splitting the cockpit in half, leaving the bottom half of the cockpit and Myers' feet dangling in the Detroit river...
Footage was captured with a GoPro Hero camera.
