Tuning radios initiates the first step for me to get to know a city.
The city is filled with the interactions of different sounds. These sounds represent the essence of the city and also build up my inner image of the city.
A 70 square-meter abandoned warehouse, 50 radios, the speakers of each is connected through extended wires, and are put in transparent plastic bags after being wrapped in local Shenzhen newspapers. The speakers hang in mid air. Visitors can freely choose to turn on, turn off or finetune the radios.
When the noise volume on the radio exceeds 80 dB, the four high-power speakers hidden around the warehouse will play back the sound of ocean waves at high volume. The sound comes directly at the audience. The audiences feel like they are surrounded by the oncoming waves. There is a skylight at the celing of the space, from which two headphones hang. Putting on the headphones, one will hear my creation of peaceful and beautiful sound from a city.
After the exhibition ended, I donated the 50 radios used from the exhibition to children in the remote areas of Tibet.
