Honorable Mention
METHOD: VIVI HEAD MOUNTED DISPLAY SYSTEM
Vivi Head Mounted Display System by Method for Bay Innovations won Honorable Mention at the 2015 UX Awards in NYC on November 16th.
An innovative head mounted display system helping monitor patient’s vital signs within a clinician’s field of view.
Bay Innovations, a healthcare startup focused on hardware for anesthetists, partnered with Method and GlobalLogic (Method’s parent company) to design and develop a head mounted display (HMD) system. Anesthesiology clinicians are responsible for keeping patients stable and safe during surgery, and the faster they respond to potential complications, the less impact there will be on the patient’s health. An HMD system can help by displaying a patient’s vital signs within a clinician’s field of view. Not only can this improve response effectiveness, but it also helps mitigate problems associated with an obstructed view of the patient monitor—allowing for more attention to be directed towards the patient and the surgical field. The result of the partnership was Vivi: a wireless HMD system developed by a multidisciplinary team of designers and engineers to help anesthetists monitor patient vital signs in the operating room.
In collaboration with GlobalLogic and consultant anesthetists from Bay Innovation, Method delivered an integrated design approach that was user-centered as well as technology and business focused. Through a process of prototyping, experimentation, user-interviews and human factors research the team quickly iterated towards software and hardware solutions that challenge the standard of glasses. A variety of tools and techniques were employed throughout the delivery process. GUI designs were sketched and implemented directly using custom software, and physical prototypes were created using everything from Lego to state-of-the-art CAD software and laser sintered polymer fabrication.
Within weeks the team engineered optics, electronics and firmware, developed a companion smartphone application, created unique device GUI, and provided industrial design and model making capability. The team developed a name, brand identity, and route to market strategy. The result: a turn-key invention and marketing solution that surpassed the partner’s expectations.
