Vanessa Paloma Elbaz talks about the role of memory and orality in the mellah (Jewish quarter) of Marrakesh, which once had as many as 35,000 Jews but now has only a dozen. The synagogues and houses are still there. The older generation remembers growing up in the mellah and can still describe life there.
