I’m Jennifer Powter, a personal weight loss coach and fitness expert. Here today I’m going to break down one of the number one things that I hear women struggling with, and that is this. They live with their husbands or their boyfriends and they say, “Jen, I don’t get it. My husband can eat whatever he wants and not gain a pound, whereas I am sharing the same food as him and I gain 10. What’s up with that?”
It’s a really good question and I want to break it down for you. How I’m going to do that is by diving away into a bit of a metaphor here or an analogy.
For a moment, just imagine an ordinary house cat. You maybe have one, you’ve probably seen one, you know what it looks like. It’s tiny, it has muscle on it, but it’s a small animal.
In contrast, I want you to think of a lion looks like. It’s big, it’s powerful, it’s a lot bigger than an ordinary kitty cat. Although they are the same species, if you see them side by side you can tell just by looking at them that obviously the lion is going to need to eat more food, simply because it’s bigger and it has more muscle. It gets to have more and consume more because it burns more calories and burns more energy every single day.
Here’s the deal. If you’re a woman watching this, we are much more like kitty cats than lions. If you’re living with a man, he’s going to be much more like a lion than a kitty cat.
Here’s what happens. If a kitty cat eats the same amount as a lion, this is the result [huge cat], a pretty chubby kitty, that is a fat cat. It’s not that the kitty has bad physiology or that its metabolism is broken, it simply means that little kitty cat has eaten beyond what he or she needs because he doesn’t burn it off every day.
Let’s take it back to us humans. You are like a kitty cat, you have kitty cat physiology. The problem is that we live in a lion sized world. We eat off of plates that are designed for lions. We go to restaurants and we get lion sized portions. When we dish up food for our lion partner, we often dish up the same quantity for us. It just doesn’t add up. All it means to solve this problem is you have to look at taking a kitty cat portion for yourself and giving your partner that lion sized portion.
What this looks like, for instance, if you’re sharing a bottle of wine, you get one-third and he gets two-thirds. If you have a tub of Haagan-Dazs ice cream, you can have maybe one-quarter of it and he gets the rest. That way you’re not going to be adding on unwanted calories to your physiology and instead you’re going to be turning the table so you can start to lose weight and get the pounds off that you’ve been trying to lose.
Moral of the story; keep in mind that you have kitty cat physiology, you need to take smaller portions consistently every day and that’s how you can start your healthy weight loss journey. If you have any questions make sure you drop them in the comments below so I can answer them.
