In this simple video I will explain what does the term 'frame rate' mean? for those who don't know what it is, it isn't something complicated, but if you wanna know more about how videos work, you must know what video frames are. You probably heard the word "frames" somewhere. This technique is still the same even years ago since the very first film was produced. But it transformed from physical, to digital. It's still the same technique though. Moving images that create a video. But not just video frames that make up motion, in video games as well.
It's all the same thing in video games but the reason video games take some power out of your computer, is because of the high 3D graphics every frame that is processed, contains a ton of high resolution environments, characters, textures, and many things all moving in real time. Which is why your computer needs a lot of power to process these kinds of frames at one second and that's why it all depends on the specs of your system. If it's strong enough, it will process enough frames to make the game playable. If not, the computer just can't handle processing all that stuff your computer will not process enough frames to make the game playable. That's why game developers of most recent PC games include adjustable graphics so you can adjust them in order for the game to run smoother at a better frame rate. And this is done for example by reducing the resolution or shadows of things in the game or reflections... etc. The more graphically detailed the game is, the more difficult it becomes to be processed by the computer.
Every generation of more advanced video games, there will be much more powerful computer hardware to handle these kinds of graphics. In fact computers are advancing faster than games do, which is why we see GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) that are powerful enough to process some games at a crazy frame rate at really high resolutions.
You can download a small piece of software that measures how much frames are being displayed at the very moment by your computer.
