A REPLACEMENT willow dragon has been erected in Cove four years after a previous sculpture was stolen.
The new creation on the A396 between Tiverton and Bampton was created in four days by Joolz Doncaster of Wicked Willow Creations which is based at Cove Garden Nursery.
The sculpture which uses willow grown at the nursery shows the legend of George slaying the dragon. Joolz said: “George has been waving his sword in mid-air at nothing for ages, so it was about time to make another dragon.
“People have been driving past seeing him grow from a steel framework and progressing to the impressive beast that he is.”
Mildred, the former dragon, was stolen in September 2011. The culprits were never caught.
“This one now is really well in the ground. She has lots of angle iron and concrete underneath so hopefully he will be here for a long time to come,” Joolz added.
“Mildred was great, but she was a much gentler dragon than this one.”
Wicked Willow are currently holding a competition to name the new dragon. For details on how to enter, visit the Facebook page facebook.com/wickedwillowcreations
Alternatively, you can view the dragon up close at the East craft fair being held at Cove Garden Nursery on Sunday, April 5 from 10am – 4pm.
