Working with Moldable Plastic - Complicated shapes made easy
These tips and tricks are valuable in everything from cosplay and costume making (masks etc..) to using them for home improvement and fixing appliances. But it is especially applicable to cosplay.
In this quick tip on working with moldable plastic aka thermoplastic, I will show you how to use them and I will teach you tips and tricks that I have learned in working with moldable plastics like Polymorph, Instamorph, Plastimake, Worblas Finest Art, Friendly Plastic, and Polly Plastics.
Now that you have the heating methods down, it is time to start building. When I started out working with this stuff I would just take a big glob of plastic, and try to shape everything on it before it cooled I quickly learned that anything I did could be easily undone when I started on another spot because the plastic was still soft and malleable all the way through. So I took a trick from my experience as a graphic designer. When I need to make a complicated image or graphic, I will break it down into elementary shapes, squares, triangles, circles, cones, rods, spheres, cubes, etc. One I have thought about what shapes roughly make up the final object, I will create just those shapes simple and easy and then let it cool while I work on the next basic piece. Then once they are all made and all cooled I will heat up the attaching surface on both pieces and meld them together seamlessly until my rough shape is complete, from there you can then re heat the outer edges and add more detail and finesse. I especially like Polly Plastics for this reason, it does very well melding into itself seamlessly and with a strong hold, some of the others I have used, either don't get sticky enough or soft enough when hot to bond completely, sometimes they may bond but there will be a visible crease.
