Here we see an X-32 (Boeing's entry into the Joint Strike Fighter competition) transitioning from Horizontal into Vertical flight. The nozzle at the back closes, and air is then ejected out of two Harrier-like vectoring nozzles at the sides. Those smaller nozzles can be turned to point downwards, so the jet can hover.
