It's our final day within the Simpson Desert itself and whilst we are keen to keep moving we are sad to leave the legendary Desert behind us.
One last treasure awaits our team of intrepid 4wdrivers ... the sight and challenge of Big Red, the biggest and meanest dune in the Simpson, the largest of well over 800 dunes we have crossed and the most eastern border of the Simpson Desert. Numerous tracks lead up to the wide flat top of Big Red and our group delights in tackling most of them. But whilst we prepare, plan and plot our individual ascents ... another surprise awaits us all. On the far side of Big Red lies a glistening lake, a rarity in the outback and the result of recent rains, the lake has been there for a number of years and is quickly drying up.
Never before seen in white man times, we are fortunate to experience this rare treasure of the Simpson Desert. More photos and 4x4 fun fill out our afternoon before an easy run brings us to the iconic town of Birdsville, the eastern gateway to the Simpson and the home of legends long gone.
