Youth Speaker, Amanda Hammett gives you some pointers on how to pick the right college for you.
I can tell it is college application time because over the last few weeks the majority of the questions coming into my office have been all about applying to college. In particular, we have been getting a lot of questions about how to find the right college for you. And nothing can make a high school senior more anxious than the thoughts of what they are going to do once they walk across that stage to get their high school diploma.
The thing is is that there is no formula...there's no secret. Everybody is different...we all have different needs and interests and skills and the financial situation varies widely amongst all of us. So, just because a certain school is right for your best friend doesn't automatically mean it is going to be the right school for you. But here are a few things to keep in mind while you are getting started in your search.
1st thing...are you looking to get an Associates degree (which is typically a 2 year degree) or are you looking to get a Bachelor's degree (which is the traditional 4 year degree)?
2ndly...next you need to decide if you want to go to a large university or maybe a small college? (Think about how you learn best. ...Would you do well in a huge lecture hall with hundreds of other students or do you need smaller classes with more discussion.
Next you need to decide what kind of setting you want the college or university you attend to be in? Do you want to go somewhere in a large city or would you prefer to go somewhere where the entire town is focused on the college or university?
This one may seem a little counterintuitive...but hear me out...Are you only considering public universities or are you also looking at private colleges and universities as well? Most people assume that private colleges and universities are always way more expensive. But that is not always the case. Private colleges can provide financial aid packages that may not be available at a public university. And many times that financial aid package can make the private college as affordable, but sometimes even less that a public university.
And last, but not least...if possible...visit the campus before you commit. For me...choosing the college I went on to attend all came down to a gut feeling. I had been offered scholarships to a few places. And on paper, the college I chose was one of the ones I was least excited about. But when I went to visit...I just knew that is where I needed to be. And if I had it to do all over again...I would still make the same choice!
So keep your options open. Ultimately, the decision is yours. And what is going to make you happy overall. The school that you choose should be what you want...not what your friends want, not what your parents want...and financially it should make sense for you in the long run...whatever that may mean for you and your particular situation.
