First test of some of my new props. I purchased 5030, 5040, and 6045 props to test but I can't use the 6 inch blades because they hit some of the electronics. I need to reconfigure some things before I can fly them. I put the 5040s on and had 2 calm test flights then the third much more aggressive flight. I didn't try the 5030s because I have a feeling they are not going to be as good as the 5040s.
The comparison
I have only flown the 5030 three blade props on this quad so this will be what I am comparing the 5040 two blade props to..
Pros
Seems to have good off the line power and quicker bursts of speed when flying slow.
Better control and maneuverability at slower speeds.
Seems easier to flip.
Cool lower sound when flying.
Cons
Slower top end speed
Requires higher RPM so battery life is shorter and much shorter when pushing it..
Conclusion
This is what I think is happening and any correction is welcome. The 5040 two blade props are not better or worse than the 5030 three blade props. It all depends on what type of flying you plan to do that should determine which prop to fly. Flying in and around a bunch of trees in the woods or in a garage at slower speeds go for the 5040 two blade props but high speed flying go for the 5030 three blade props.
I think the reason for my results is because each blade of the three bladed props are closer together than the two bladed props. At slower flying speeds each blade of the three bladed prop is cutting into wash of the blade in front of it in the rotation. This disrupts each blades ability for lift while the two bladed props get a better bit into the air for better lift.
This all changed when flying at higher speeds because of how quickly the air is passing by the quad and through each prop which changes the location of the wash to be below, or some other direction, each blade. This change in wash location allows each blade of the three bladed props to get a better bite for more lift. At the same time the two bladed prop requires higher RPM for the same speed so it has a lower top end speed.
It is my opinion that the faster speed the quad flies, forward or climbing, that each blade of the three bladed prop becomes more efficient while the two bladed prop stays somewhat consistent.
